I like that you've framed this transcendence as more of an involuntary act of the viewer's rather than a conscience choice. I think this ties well with your idea that art deeply concerned with its own purpose, terrified of being misunderstood, can limit itself.

When I was young I believed that filtering the world through the lens/pov of what I was reading/watching/viewing/hearing was a result of a definitive lack of self. Barring any obsessive or dissociative tendencies, I don't believe that anymore. Like you've written, specific art has made me believe that this the only natural way to engage with material produced not necessarily without a defined, sole purpose, but by artists who've created something that cannot help but be revisited by someone as they continue to exist day to day.

to have a definitive sense of self that is not regularly punctured or disassembled by art would be a DULL existence!!!

Coincidently I’m halfway through Underworld right now and having a similar experience - seems to be working on my brain while closed on the nightstand.

Love the visual pieces throughout here.

I’m quite enjoying it, faster than it looks.

This nourishing itself idea brings to mind many albums I didn’t love right away, save for a track or two - then at some point it taste breaks and becomes beloved.

Hang and Seeing Other People by Foxygen did this to me.
