I like that you've framed this transcendence as more of an involuntary act of the viewer's rather than a conscience choice. I think this ties well with your idea that art deeply concerned with its own purpose, terrified of being misunderstood, can limit itself.

When I was young I believed that filtering the world through the lens/pov of what I was reading/watching/viewing/hearing was a result of a definitive lack of self. Barring any obsessive or dissociative tendencies, I don't believe that anymore. Like you've written, specific art has made me believe that this the only natural way to engage with material produced not necessarily without a defined, sole purpose, but by artists who've created something that cannot help but be revisited by someone as they continue to exist day to day.

to have a definitive sense of self that is not regularly punctured or disassembled by art would be a DULL existence!!!

Coincidently I’m halfway through Underworld right now and having a similar experience - seems to be working on my brain while closed on the nightstand.

I’m quite enjoying it, faster than it looks.

This nourishing itself idea brings to mind many albums I didn’t love right away, save for a track or two - then at some point it taste breaks and becomes beloved.

Hang and Seeing Other People by Foxygen did this to me.
